Interview with the singer songwriter
Georgia, and jazz, on her mind
Last week, a pretty, 19-year-old singer named Katie Melua slipped past Dido and reached No. 1 in the album charts with her debut CD, a gentle, melodic collection of late-night, light jazz and blues called Call Off the Search. Katie, who sings in a sweet, plaintive voice which many reviewers have compared to Ella Fitzgerald's, has had no big publicity campaign, nor even a prime-time introduction on a television talent show. Nor does she display any signs of being a pushy little starlet.
